Perth City Hall

Dear Editor, – Perth City Hall is one of the last buildings in Perth with real architectural merit. As an architect, and former citizen in Perth, I find this project ludicrous.Read

Binn Farm methane argument ‘untrue’

Dear Editor, – In his recent letter (PA, April 9) John Ferguson suggests that without a new incinerator at Binn Farm we’ll have to send biodegradable waste (mostly food, paper/card and garden waste) to landfill where it will rot and produce the powerful greenhouse gas methane. This is simply not true. Biodegradable waste can be recycled or treated by composting or anaerobic digestion, which emit no methane to air, and barely a tenth of the CO2 of incineration.Read

General Election: letter to editor

Dear Editor, – Labour’s plans to increase national insurance by 1% will hit businesses in Perthshire and comes at exactly the wrong time in the economic cycle.Read

Parking charges set to rise

Dear Editor, – I have recently had numerous customers remarking how quiet the centre of Perth is and shop turnover verifies this. At the same time I read that all the council can think of is raising car park charges. This is an interesting business attitude to take by the council as my business sense tells me that a reduction, rather than a rise, would benefit the long time prosperity of the city and consequently the council.Read

Fruit farm case is timely reminder

Dear Editor, – Your front cover article (March 26) about the exploitation of foreign workers, especially in the farming and fruit picking industry, is a timely reminder about the conditions underpinning our “low inflation rate”.Read

Residents concerned over planned Blairgowrie visitor centre

Dear Editor, – This group of concerned residents writes to express the misgivings it holds regarding the Visitor Centre being proposed for Lower Mill Street, Blairgowrie. The group feels many members of the local community are unaware of what is proposed. Notification of public meetings was sketchy, with the public meeting held on January 21 arbitrarily closed before all questions had been put and answered.Read

Soldier walking 500 miles to fight for daughter’s place at blind school

Dear Editor, – Mac McGearey, a soldier based at Redford Barracks with 23 years’ service, is walking 500 miles round Scotland to raise money to fund a place at the Royal Blind School in Edinburgh for his severely disabled 13-year-old daughter Ciara, while he attempts to fight a decision by the City of Edinburgh Council not to fund the placement. Mac aimed to reach Perth yesterday (Monday).Read

Windfarm claims “are exaggerated

Dear Editor, – I refer to your article on Page 21 of the PA on January 26 in which it was pointed out that during the recent cold spell the average output of UK windfarms was just 4%. I would like to point out that the developers’ claim that Standingfauld would provide sufficient electricity for 11000 homes is highly misleading even when the wind does blow.Read
