No Chamber support for Healthworks

Dear Editor – It was eye-opening to read Mike Beale’s article (page 16 of the PA on August 1) trumpeting the ‘vision and leadership’ of himself and his Chamber of Commerce chums.

His condemnation of anyone who dares criticise the actions of his self-serving organisation as lethargic pessimists was downright appalling.

As far as I am aware – as a poor unfortunate victim of ‘man’s natural tendency’ – the gum-bashers at the chamber were nowhere to be seen (or heard) during the campaign to save the doomed Healthworks pool and gym complex from the corporate axe-wielders at Norwich Union (AVIVA).

Nor, as far as I can see, have they taken much of an interest in the troubles of finding a use for the dilapidated St Paul’s church.

They do, however, never tire of talking up their own, and each other’s, corporate achievements.

It’s high time that Mike and his colleagues replaced their rhetorical optimism, mutual back-slapping and blind loyalty to the corporate moguls of Perth and Kinross and tried giving a little thought to the views, hopes and, indeed, aspirations of us pessimistic, lethargic, lesser mortals of the community.

Then he wouldn’t feel the need to publish pompous self-justifying articles in the local press.

Seizure - not alcohol - to blame for interruption

Dear Editor, – It was gratifying to read how much Mr Gellatly enjoyed the 59th All Scotland Accordion and Fiddle Festival here at Perth Concert Hall (Letters, November 14). There is surely no need to invent a clapping machine when audience response to the concert was so rapturous. Read
