Dear Editor, – I had the privilege of attending the North Church on Sunday, May 24, for the service to be conducted by Rev Hugh O'Brien as sole nominee for the vacant minister's post.
Since around the beginning of 2008 we have been without a minister.
The Church of Scotland granted us permission to 'call' a new minister and the process commenced in the autumn with the appointment of a nominating committee of 13 hardy souls from the congregation.
All their hard work was rewarded when they proposed Rev Hugh O'Brien as sole nominee.
The building was a buzz of excitement on Sunday morning as about 9.15am around 400 members gathered for what was to be a rather longer service than usual.
Our Praise Band led a 20 minute set of rousing worship songs after which Hugh was introduced and led the service.
Following the formal part of the service the congregation were invited to vote 'for' or 'against' the appointment of Hugh O'Brien by indictaing with a cross on a ballot paper already provided. The ballot papers were collected and counting began.
After about 30 minutes the Rev Jim Stewart officiating, approached the lecturn with the vote.
In true 'Dancing on Ice' style announcing, he announced - "the votes for appointing Hugh O'Brien (pause) ... 319".
"votes against the appointment of Hugh O'Brien (longer pause) ... NONE.
The whole place erupted in clapping, cheering, whistling and a standing ovation.
The North Church has a new minister.
It was great to be there, great to be part of the process and celebrations.
Great that here we have a unanimous opinion and that we can all move forward together in unison.
The Holy Spirit is certainly working in Perth and in the lives of the people of Perth.
Would that other organisations take note that maybe the way forward that is best is not necessarily your way, but a combination of several ideas, and that working together will achieve much more than going it alone.
God bless all participants on Sunday and everyone in Perth.
