Views on the planned Scone supermarket

Dear Editor, – In the Perthshire Advertiser on November 6 and 13, two Scone residents spoke up in favour of the proposed supermarket in Scone, as is their right.

They really had no need to make the effort because it is generally presumed that if you don’t speak up, you are in agreement/have no objection.

Those of us who have shown our objections (many and varied) are attempting to prevent planning permission being granted because of the long-term effect on the village we have chosen to live in. The shops we have are also appropriate for a village environment.

Scone is still a village not a town – and our nearest town, Perth, has more than enough supermarkets for those who want to shop at one.

The supermarket plans to provide about 300 parking spaces and will expect to be full most of the time. It will probably be open 8 to 8, the average shopper will be there for about an hour (depending on whether they are buying jeans or wine or having a coffee), so you don’t have to be a mathematician to realise they are hoping for a catchment area much greater than Scone alone. What of traffic through the centre of the village then?

To re-iterate, if you want the supermarket you can relax unless sufficient people who do not want this supermarket make their views known.

J. Forrest,

Bonhard Road,

Scone, PH2 6QL.
