Cuts attack the most vulnerable in our society

Dear Editor, – The spending cuts of this Tory government in Westminster directly attack the most vulnerable in our society, the elderly, the sick, young children and young adults.

The Scottish people are lucky to have a government that is standing firm on tuition fees, free prescriptions and free care for the elderly.

If we charge tuition fees, only the well-off can afford to send their children to university. If we charge for prescriptions, only the well off can afford to be ill. If we charge for care for the elderl,y only the well off can get the support they need when they can no longer look after themselves.

For years the Scottish people suffered due to the democratic deficit that gave us the Thatcher government in Westminster. In the end, however, we did manage to get our own elected parliament in Edinburgh.

I can see no reason why we should suffer years of the Cameron government. Let’s use our parliament and in the May election let’s vote to free ourselves from the co-dependence of our relationship with Westminster.

It’s time to take charge of our own future. It is time for independence.
