Dec 3 2010 Perthshire Advertiser Friday
Dear Editor, – During the firework display the feelings of joy quickly faded and I became very disheartened at the sheer financial cost of such a massive display over the river.
Whilst it was a lovely show I started thinking about the people of Perth and Kinross who are suffering hardship due to the current financial climate.
There will be families struggling this Christmas due to parents losing jobs, hundreds of homeless people who will go cold and hungry, vital services in our communities being lost and massive cut backs across the board.
I feel quite strongly that it was rather insensitive and not in keeping with how the people of Perth may be feeling during this uncertain time.
This display must have cost quite literally thousands of pounds and I put it to the Perth and Kinross Council that the money could have been spent more wisely.
I do understand that it was time to celebrate but I really feel that there are too many social injustices within our local community to put on such a feature. I would rather have seen the money being spent on our community in a constructive way helping to save jobs than going up in smoke.
I don't want to sound as if I am a stick in the mud or a party pooper but surely I can't be the only one in Perth feeling like it was a waste of money, time and valuable resources.
