Flooding disaster at Perth post office

Dear Editor, – The flooding disaster to the post office in Perth was an event waiting to happen as a result of neglected property above it.

The photograph (right) is of the original post office which was well known and remembered for its architectural glory and spaciousness internally, which not only served its purpose as a post office, but was also a community dating place.

Conscience should be rattling within our planners as to why this building met such a destructive fate to its central public use, but let us not forget that it is only one of the many examples that went under the hammer of what has become known as changing times. The other example was the removal of the two cannons which had their place at the entrance to the North Inch at Rose Terrace.

We now have a public city hall waiting in limbo. Would it not be better to convert this building into a new post office which would be central to public use, free from the fear of flooding from property above, and has a robust architectural history. It would be worth our planners consideration to replace with thought the cost of its demolition by converting this expenditure towards a new post office, or is this too much of a tragic flaw?
