WHILE everyone is entitled to air their opinion in the PA (lawyers permitting of course), I was a bit baffled by the gent who got in touch last week to complain that the Elton John concert was being held on the anniversary of the Piper Alpha tragedy.
The reader – who declined to be named “for fear of reprisal” – set about Perth and Kinross Council for “refusing to make a gesture” over a tribute.
Fair enough, the council is responsible for licensing such events (and why would they refuse such a coup for the Fair City?), but surely it’s entirely up to the promoter and the artist whether things like a minute’s silence are held on the day.
No-one is disputing the enormity of Piper Alpha...but every day marks a poignant anniversary for someone. Life must go on.
