I THOUGHT I’d throw caution to the wind this week and wade into the City Hall debate.
For what it’s worth, I think John Bullough is absolutely right – it’s time to knock down this white elephant and replace it with a city square.
The economic conditions are not right for another shopping development, and besides, if the proposals to create a retail ‘corridor’ through the Woolworths site get the nod then Perth will be knee-deep in shops.
As for its so-called architectural merits...am I the only person who thinks that it looks like a brick privvy with a couple of questionable cherubs on top?
With a bit of vision, we could have a proper focal point for our Fair City. Instead of this great lump of stone, we could have markets, ice-rinks, funfairs and other events that would bring the WHOLE community together and not just the rarified few who remember the City Hall’s heyday in the 60s and 70s.
If PKC changes its mind, then I’ll happily drive the first bulldozer.
