Curling: Farmers to battle it out on the ice

PERTH is playing host to Europe’s biggest curling competition next week.

The 26th annual Yara Farmers’ Curling Championship will be rolling out from Monday through to Friday at the Dewars Centre.

Up to 80 teams will battle it out on the ice.

Hundreds of spectators from all over the UK will converge on the event in anticipation of seeing quality curling.

Alan Wood, area manager for Yara and championship organiser, is anticipating world class performances.

“We have some top competitors taking part, such as Norman Brown who is European champion. The best English curlers, such as Andrew Reed and Michel Sutherland, will also cross the border in the hope of getting their name on the trophy.

“Reigning champions Will Davidson-Gall, Robin Anderson, Billy Henderson and Roy Henderson will prove tough opposition – but curling, like golf, is about getting through the early rounds and improving as the championship gets into its later stages.”

The event, in its 26th year, has become a significant date in the farming diary and Yara, who have sponsored and organised the event since its conception, are proud to be associated with not just the sport – but with the supporters as well.

Tove Anderson, managing director for Yara UK. commented: “It is the enthusiasm of all the players and spectators that makes it such a pleasure for us to organise and run this event.”

“The farming industry has had a challenging year and farmers have had to make difficult decisions and in 2009 counteracting volatility will remain a key issue to address – it is important for Yara to support farm businesses throughout England and Scotland and the Curling Championship is an excellent way for us to keep in touch with friends and customers alike”

Mr Wood noted: “This is a great chance for farmers to come together, socialise and discuss their industry.

“With the Winter Olympics taking place in Vancouver next year we may even see a future Olympian or gold medal winner here.”
