Musicians' backing for Perth charity album

A LINE-UP of no fewer than 65 artists feature on a dazzling new charity CD put together by a Perth music fan.

Little-known unsigned acts rub shoulders with the likes of leading UK troubadour Ed Harcourt and fast-rising Scots pop/ rock outfit Crash My Model Car on ‘Doing It For the Kids ‘08’ - an inspiring initiative masterminded by Fair City accountant Sandy Fyfe.

All proceeds from the 65-track download, which includes Harcourt’s ‘Kids (Rise from the Ashes)’ and CMMC’s ‘Omu Prin & Me’, will go to the Yorkhill Children’s Foundation for sick kids.

The album, which has been split into three sections entitled ‘Hope’, ‘Health’ and ‘Happiness’, is a successor to the Creation Records release of the same name which appeared in 1988 and featured the likes of Primal Scream, House Of Love, My Bloody Valentine and The Times.

Among those involved are Jim Jasmine, a contributor to the original low-price record with his band Jasmine Minks, who shows up again with ‘You Know My Name is Love’.

Big County acts who appear on the new compilation are Perth-based Americana favourites Southpaw and Blairgowrie’s Alex Lowe, leader of Garage Flowers and formerly the frontman with late-‘90s Creation signings Hurricane #1.

Also included are London-based alt-bluegrass exponents The Coal Porters, breaking Scottish acts Popup, Kim Edgar and Roddy Hart, veteran folk rockers The River Detectives and former Times eccentric Ed Ball.

Sandy (38), whose three-year-old-daughter was treated at Glasgow’s Yorkhill Hospital, said he has received “incredible support” from the bands involved.

“Several artists have had their own personal experiences of the hospital either as patient or parent,” he said.

“I have explained to many of those involved why I wanted to do this and I think the passion and emotion has been persuasive.

“We have been rewarded with a response featuring some fantastic artistes and I am grateful to them all.”

The album is available now as a download priced just £6.49 from www.resonan cestore.com/yorkhillproject

It is also planned to auction off a limited run of 266 individually numbered CDs over the coming months - one for each bed in the hospital - with each one carrying a Yorkhill ward and bed number.

The collection was officially launched at a special gig in Glasgow’s Classic Grand last Thursday.
