Glenfarg date for Benny Gallagher

LEGENDARY songwriter Benny Gallagher will reprise his classic compositions in Perthshire on Saturday.

As part of Seventies hit-makers Gallagher & Lyle, the Scot co-wrote such timeless classics as Breakaway, I Wanna Stay With You and Heart On My Sleeve.

With Graham Lyle, Gallagher joined The Beatles’ publishing company Apple in the Sixties, before forming McGuinness Flint, who had smashes with When I’m Dead And Gone and Malt And Barley Blues.

After two albums the duo decided it was time to develop their own careers and formed Gallagher & Lyle.

World tours and a string of mega-hits followed, with Art Garfunkel enjoying a major success with his version of Breakaway.

After the Largs duo decided to go their separate ways in 1979, Gallagher continued his songwriting career in the UK, with occasional visits to Nashville, where Don Williams gave him his first country chart-topper with Stay Young.

Down the years Gallagher has worked with the likes of Paul McCartney, Mary Hopkin, Eric Clapton, The Blues Band, Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Lane, Elkie Brooks, Sandy Denny, Ralph McTell, Georgie Fame, Jim Diamond, Andy Fairweather-Low, Don Williams and Gary Brooker, as well as blues legends Arthur Big Boy Cruddup and Champion Jack Dupree.

In the Nineties, Gallagher played bass and sung with The Manfreds. Nowadays he plays and writes as a solo artist.

His show at the Glenfarg Hotel gets underway at 9pm on Saturday. Tickets from 01577 830241.
