Strummin’ at the double

GUITAR enthusiasts are being invited to attend an acoustic double bill at Perth’s Late Lounge on Thursday.

The Watergate venue will play host to steel-string wizard Clive Carroll and award-winning guitar and mandolin duo Wingin’ It (right), one half of whom is Perth College graduate Adam Bulley.

Clive Carroll who has been described by Acoustic Guitar magazine as “probably the best and most original young acoustic guitar player and composer in Britain”, was born into a family of musicians in 1975.

His father made the infant Clive his first banjo and he was playing in the family band within a few years.

Aged nine he started to play the guitar, later joining a soul group and several orchestras.

In 1998, Carroll gained a first class honours degree in composition and guitar from Trinity College, London, where he was also awarded a prize to record Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with the college orchestra, and he subsequently gained a host of further accolades.

In 2000 he released his debut album Sixth Sense (2000) and over the next two years he toured Europe and the USA with John Renbourn.

Carroll’s next full-length solo effort The Red Guitar was completed in 2004, after he joined Australian guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel on tour.

He has since played several tours with International Guitar Night of America, collaborating with world class guitarists such as Ralph Towner, D’Gary and Vishwa Moham Bhatt.

Last November saw the release of Clive’s third solo album, Life In Colour, and he is currently working on further studio recordings.

Meanwhile, Wingin’ It duo Adam Bulley and Chaz McKenzie were winners of a prestigious Danny Kyle Award at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival in 2007.

They have also performed at major events all over Scotland.

Thursday’s Late Lounge gig in Brennans Bar gets underway at 8pm, with tickets available from Bandwagon Music in Perth, or by calling 01738 637714.
