Justin Currie to play Perth

FORMER Del Amitri frontman Justin Currie is set to visit Perth for a gig with a difference.

The singer-songwriter will join award-winning trumpeter Ryan Quigley’s Big Band at Perth Theatre on March 25.

Currie (right) and friends are heading out on a Scottish tour following their sell-out concert together during last year’s Glasgow Jazz Festival.

With a well-earned reputation for fiery musical ventures and showmanship, Quigley (foot) is expected to draw on all the punch and dynamism of his acclaimed sextet as they tackle a selection of classic big band standards and arrangements of Currie’s songs.

The trumpet-player is regarded as one of the most prominent musicians in the UK following success with his own line-up top Scottish jazz musicians at both the Parliamentary Jazz Awards and the Scottish Jazz Awards.

In his time with Del Amitri, Currie scored huge success with the singles Kiss This Thing Goodbye, Stone Cold Sober, Nothing Ever Happens and Always The Last To Know.

Currie kept a low profile following the release of Del Amitri’s last album Can You Do Me Good? in 2002, eventually releasing his first solo album, What Is Love For?, in autumn 2007.

He has previously worked with musicians such as Stuart Nisbet, Eddi Reader, Colin McIntyre, Blazin’ Fiddles, Kevin McDermott and Tom McRae.

His latest solo album The Great War is due for release in April.

Quigley and Currie will be at Perth Theatre on March 25. Tickets are available by calling 01738 621031, or from www.horsecross.co.uk
