IT was the most outrageous, ‘campest’ performance ever witnessed at Perth Theatre – and it was also possibly the most entertaining couple of hours that the majority of ticket holders had enjoyed in a long time.
Well-known from their 15 seconds of fame each week on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, the four boys – dubbed succinctly as Four Poofs and a Piano – flounced on to the High Street stage with a resounding version of The Weather Girls’ classic “It’s Raining Men” and proceeded to send themselves – and others – up with new lyrics to a variety of well-known hits plus a number of self-penned originals.
But very apparent throughout the comic bedlam that persisted was a high standard of musicality – along with their opening number, the only other untampered piece was the Bohemian Rhapsody which opened the second half.
Their take on boy bands with “Took That” and first-half climax with a hilarious song about “Tescos” had the crowd in fits.
And who would have thought that a Perth Festival of the Arts audience would ever be singing along with “Do You . . .” – no, I can’t go into detail; this is a family newspaper!!
David (at the piano), David (not at the piano), Stephen and Ian were also fleet of foot and their movement (including a tap routine and their Top of the Pops dance troupe ‘Pansies People”) was so slick.
Don’t let anyone tell you that this arts festival is elitist!
