What a piping good showcase of talent

THE Ross Ainslie and Jarlath Henderson Trio plus Kathryn and Peter Tickell will form a formidable double bill of talent when they perform at Pitlochry Festival Theatre.

Headliner of the concert on Sunday, June 22 (at 8pm) is Kathryn Tickell, a composer and performer whose work is deeply connected to the landscape and people of Northumbria, in particular the North Tyne Valley.

As well as composing her own music she has collaborated with artists as diverse as Sting, Andy Sheppard and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies.

As founder of the Young Musicians’ Fund and Artistic Director of Folkestra, she has a real commitment to emerging artists in the north east of England.

Kathryn Tickell is a genuine voice for Northumbrian traditional music and continues to bring her wealth of creativity to audiences worldwide.

The Ross Ainslie and Jarlath Henderson Trio features two of the country’s most accomplished young pipers (Perth’s Ross Ainslie and Jarleth Henderson from Northern Ireland) and guitarist and bodhran player Ali Hutton from Methven. The trio, who describe themselves as ‘high energy pipe fiends’, released their critically-acclaimed debut album (Vertical Records) at Showcase Scotland, during Celtic Connections.

Ross and Ali are former members of the Grade 1 Vale of Atholl Pipe Band. Ross has since toured with his tutor the late Gordon Duncan and was involved in Ivan Drever's band 'Clueless' before recently playing with Flook!, Dougie MacLean and Salsa Celtica.

Jarlath is a three time All-Ireland Champion' Uilleann Piper and in December 2003 he became the first Irish musician to win the BBC Young Folk Musician Of The Year award.

As well as showcasing their own repertoires, the trio will also perform newly-written ensemble pieces, described as ‘Scottish traditional music with a contemporary slant.’
