Tribute to composer

A PERTHSHIRE choir are about to stretch their vocal chords in homage to renowned composer Felix Mendelssohn.

The 65-strong Glenalmond College Chapel Choir – led by soloist mezzo-soprano Katie Coventry – will perform Mendelssohn's “O for the Wings of a Dove” at the same time as over 100 other groups across the UK on May 10.

Organised by BBC Radio 3, the day-long tribute marks the 200th anniversary of the German composer’s birth.

Aled Jones, presenter of Radio 3’s The Choir – and widely known as the voice behind the score for 1982’s The Snowman said: “This will offer a splendid showcase for the pure voice of a young soprano soloist, boy or girl.

“Mendelssohn's beautifully evocative setting has direct emotional appeal, as many people remember it from Ernest Lough's iconic recording with The Temple Church Choir, which has always been one of my personal favourites,” he said.

Glenalmond music director, Robert Gower, added: “Mendelssohn's anthem is a favourite from our repertoire and we are delighted it is being widely celebrated.

“There are only two Scottish choirs involved at present but we’re hoping more will get involved soon,” he said.

The closing registration date for any other groups wishing to take part is Saturday May 2.
