Lunch time talk at Perth Museum & Art Gallery

PERTH Museum and Art Gallery’s series of lunchtime talks continues tomorrow with Principal Officer of History, Susan Payne presenting the fascinating story of a unique 17th Century jacket.

When, in 2003, a Perthshire family carried this remarkable garment into the George Street venue, it was so remarkable the curator was lost for words!

Susan explained: “There are very few early 17th century doublets that survive and fewer still in a reasonable condition. For years to come the doublet will be the object of intense interest both nationally and internationally.”

The 1620’s doublet was in such a fragile condition on its arrival at Perth Museum and Art Gallery that researchers did not want to handle it for fear of damaging it even further. A generous grant from The Heritage Lottery Fund enabled conservation work to be carried out by The Scottish Conservation Studio, and the project has ensured that visitors and researchers can now safely access the doublet.

Susan’s talk tomorrow at 1pm tells the story of the doublet, including its conservation, looks at what was happening in Perthshire at the beginning of the 17th century, and puts the doublet into context.

Admission free and there is no need to book.
