‘ENCOUNTERS With Time’ is the latest exhibition by artists from Perthshire Visual Artists Forum (PVAF) on show from Sunday at the Threshold artspace in Perth Theatre.
This is the second in a linked series of three guest-curated exhibitions initiated by Horsecross Arts as part of its ongoing commitment to support local artists.
All the works in the show were selected from an open submission by an independent selector, Maria Devaney principal officer (Art) at Perth Museum and Art Gallery.
Commenting on the range and quality of the works submitted she said: “I was delighted to be invited to curate the Encounters with Time show and it was a great way to get to know the work of the PVAF members.
“I was very impressed by the standard of the work generally and the diverse range of skills and ideas explored around the theme.
“The spaces at the theatre are quite intimate and spread out around the building, so the aim was to create a coherent journey, while finding the right kind of space to show the work in the best possible light. Having a dedicated gallery space in the theatre is a really great idea. Not only does it give local artists the opportunity to show their work, but people who perhaps wouldn’t visit a contemporary art show have the chance to discover the works while having a night out at the theatre.”
The exhibition features work by 24 PVAF member artists: Aileen Stackhouse, Alison Leeper, Anita Hutchison, Ann Coomber, Charmian Pollok, Clare Yarrington, Claudia Wegner, Darienne Tosh, Douglas MacBride, Genie Dee, Jackie Smith, Katy Galbraith, Kay Hood, Kyra Clegg, Lesley Mcdermott, Lorna Radbourne, Malize McBride, Mary Golden, Marysia Lachowicz, Phil Brammer, Rosemary Bassett, Su Grierson, Tricia Anderson and Bruce Shaw.
The artists examine the theme of time with stained glass, mosaic, sculpture and video pieces taking their place amidst drawing, painting, prints and photography.
The use of assemblages of objects or images is an approach common to two and three dimensional works from some of the PVAF artists, and drawing is more evident in this exhibition than it has been in previous PVAF shows in the gallery.
Encounters II: With Time launches on Sunday with a free brunch and preview in a double bill alongside the launch of Collections II: Works by international artists in Perth Concert Hall’s Threshold artspace. Both exhibitions run until Saturday, October 14.
