BMW is most efficient

THE Auto Express Special Honour is awarded to acknowledge a technology, car maker, specialist motoring industry or any other achievement in the last 12 months.

This year, it goes to a programme of technologies that makes more effective use of fuel.

As the price of oil climbs, the credit crunch bites and some makers lag behind in the race for cleaner powerplants, one marque stands out.

By introducing new EfficientDynamics technologies, BMW has boosted fuel economy, while reducing exhaust emissions. And rather than one headline-grabbing model, EfficientDynamics comes as standard on nearly every new BMW.

Come to a halt and the engine cuts out, yet as soon as you press the clutch pedal to engage first gear, it whirs back into life.

Other innovations include regenerative brakes which charge the battery when you slow down. And it does it all without burdening the consumer with cost or compromise.
