THE world of large 4x4s is not one normally associated with low emissions and excellent fuel consumption.

Even the diesel versions of these big bruisers are still very thirsty by ordinary standards.

Then there is the Lexus RX 400h - a car that really is all things to all men - and shows what the latest technology can do.

It was the world's first four wheel drive (4WD) petrol/electric car, achieving power and performance levels as good as any other luxury 4WD.

Yet it achieves 35mpg economy and ultra low emissions using a silky smooth 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine combined with electric motors.

Continuously variable automatic transmission gives completely seamless changes for the most marvellous quiet progress.

The hybrid system operates in several modes. It has stop-start for heavy traffic and at low speeds runs on electric motors alone.

At high speed, the engine drives the wheels and powers the generator for the electric motors.
