Peugeot 407 Sport HDi 140 FAP
THE intake of breath was audible when Peugeot announced last summer that it would no longer sell petrol versions of the 407.
A lack of demand as buyers switch to diesel was given as the reason for the historic decision which was also prompted by soaring costs.
Well, if the two-litre oil burner in the 407 I drove is anything to go buy, it was not only a brave decision, but also the right one.
The recently updated power unit, with a slick six-speed manual gearbox, develops 140bhp which equates to a 0-60mph time of just under ten seconds and a top speed of 129mph. It also packs a decent punch at lower speeds making overtaking a cinch. You can see Peugeot's point as a diesel this good is going to leave any petrol alternative struggling to attract interest.
Especially when you take into account an average fuel economy figure of close to 50mpg and carbon dioxide emissions reduced to 150g/km that allows the 407 to pull off the neat trick of not stretching the purse strings while still being decent to drive.
The ride is firm but not uncomfortably so, while handling is good with plenty of grip through corners although the steering is quite light so there's not as much feedback to the driver as you would like.
It's an eye-catching car to look at with the radical nose-heavy design setting it apart from its rivals. Step into the cabin and there's a far more traditional approach with lots of shiny plastic and neat switchgear. It looks smart and is solidly built so should be able to withstand the more robust attentions of younger family members.
The 407 is a button-pushers paradise with the centre console festooned with a plethora of controls. However, what initially looks a confusing mess is actually quite easy to navigate and the quality of the finish is classy.
The saloon is not as spacious as some of its rivals as the sporty styling makes its presence felt with headroom at a premium for rear passengers, while the boot is a little smaller than you would expect.
Occupants are well insulated from the outside world however and long journeys are no chore.
Equipment levels are good on the 407 with all models getting climate control, electric front windows, a radio/CD player and cruise control. Step up to the SR model and Peugeot add alloy wheels, Bluetooth phone connectivity and a satellite navigation system, while the Sport trim gains dual zone climate control, electrically folding door mirrors, electrically adjustable seats, rain-sensing windscreen wipers and automatic headlights, plus parking sensors and leather interior.
Deadlocks, an alarm and an immobiliser are also thrown in to deter the criminal element.
The 407 offers a lot of protection in the event of an accident with twin front, side and curtain airbags, plus a driver's knee bag under the steering column, whilst a host of electronic gizmos, including a stability control system, are included to help keep you on the road.
So, if you are looking for an economical, comfortable, stylish family saloon, the 407 has to be on the shortlist.
