BlueSport a surprising revelation
FOR a car maker, there is nothing like unveiling a secret new model at a motor show.
That's what Volkswagen achieved at the North American Show in Detroit last week with the concept BlueSport - a two-seat sports car that ticks all the right ecological and performance boxes.
They have lifted the engine from the front and put it behind the seats to create a mid-engined layout with perfect front to rear weight distribution for top handling.
That engine is a 180bhp version of the 2.0-litre TDI which is good for no less than 65 miles per gallon and, in the new lightweight body, brings emissions down to an excellent 113g/km.
Power goes to the rear wheels through the marvellous DSG semi-automatic gearbox - which is the best auto in the world - and the combination gives fine acceleration and a top speed of 140 miles an hour.
This new car has been so well thought out, it would be a strong contender for the sports car market and I believe they will produce close to it.
Interior
The BlueSport combines an elegant shape with a purposeful stance and innovative design details.
It has a retractable fabric roof and there's plenty of storage under the bonnet and in the rear boot.
Sports seats are upholstered in black leather and a dash-mounted touchscreen gives access to all information and entertainment functions.
