QUIRKY newcomer Afishyonados is a welcome addition to a Fair City’s restaurant scene that often seems to disappoint fish lovers like myself.
Sitting next door to Simon Howie on the Old High Street, this charming little restaurant – decorated with all things nautical – has grown out of the busy take-away business next door.
As well as the classic chip shop favourites, there is a small, but interesting, selection of Piscean delights ... deep-fried whitebait and prawn cocktails particularly caught my eye.
Meat lovers are also catered for, with the menu boasting all manner of pies from next-door neighbour Simon Howie.
But despite being tempted by the steak and gravy pie and chips combo (him) and the deep-fried whitebait (me), Other Half and I eventually decided to stick with the classics.
Two ‘Famous Fish Teas’ were ordered before we sat back in mouth-watering anticipation.
And we certainly weren’t disappointed!
Two jumbo slices of haddock were served with mountains of proper chips, bright green mushy peas, bread and butter and a big pot of steaming hot tea.
This was the way a good fish tea should be.
The fish was so fresh it could have back-flipped off the plate, the batter was light and crunchy...but best of all were the chips.
No sign of bulk-bought frozen monstrosities here, these thick-cut, home-made beauties were just crying out to be dunked in brown sauce and rolled into a buttie.
Lovers of the full Scottish high tea could have rounded the meal off with a buttered scone and jam, but Other Half and I decided to quit while we were ahead.
Afishyonados is by no means catering to the ‘langoustine and Sancerre’ crowd, but it’s small repertoire of well-cooked favourites is bound to make it a favourite with Fair City fish lovers.
