Jobs axed at city parcels business

THE recession has taken its toll at a Perth parcels business based on the city’s Inveralmond Industrial Estate.

Three of the 66-strong staff have been made redundant at Tuffnells Parcels Express, in Ruthvenfield Road.

A statement issued by the company this week said: “Like the majority of businesses, due to the current economic climate, we have been forced to closely examine costs.

“Companies throughout Scotland are ordering in smaller quantities, they do not want unnecessary stock sitting in their warehouse and, as such, that has had a negative knock-on effect to our whole industry.

“We are not the only carrier that has had to closely examine their cost base. It’s a case of cutting the cloth accordingly.”

During the last few years, Tuffnells Parcels Express has invested in the Perth location, undertaking extensive building expansion to cater for anticipated future growth.

“Although growth may be at a slower pace than expected, we now have a very capable property for the future,” stressed the spokesman.

“Perth depot houses an exceptionally committed team who ensure that Tuffnells maintain the high standard of service that our customers have become accustomed to.”

Tuffnells, who have three depots in Scotland, have also recently commissioned the building of a new purpose-built depot in Lanark to replace the existing outlet there.

Due to be completed in May, the new Lanark site will become the largest parcel carrier depot in Scotland.

Brian McDonald, general manager at the Perth depot, added: “Tuffnells are fully committed to maintaining a strong presence in Scotland for many years to come.”
