Start-ups on the rise

PERTH and Kinross is one of only two local authority areas to show an increase in business start-ups in the first quarter of 2009, compared to the same time last year.

That’s according to figures from the Scottish Clearing Banks which show that in the first quarter of 2009 137 new business bank accounts were opened in Perth and Kinross, compared to 126 in the first quarter of 2008.

The only other Scottish local authority area with an increase was West Lothian.

Enterprise and Infrastructure convener, Councillor John Kellas, said: “This is very good news for the local economy of Perth and Kinross and shows that the area continues to be a very attractive place to do business.

“The indications we have so far show that the local economy generally appears to be standing up well to the downturn.’’
