BIRD-LOVERS are being invited to view the world’s fastest bird, the peregrine falcon, right in the heart of Perth city centre.
RSPB Scotland and St Matthew’s Church of Scotland, in Tay Street, are offering people the chance to see wonderful close up views of these beautiful birds of prey, feeding and perching on the church’s steeple.
The “Aren’t Birds Brilliant!” project will be open on Fridays and Saturdays between 10am and 5pm and Sundays between 12.30 and 5pm, from now until August 3.
The peregrines, which can fly at speeds of over 120mph, perch and feed on St Matthew’s 212ft high steeple, a famous city landmark.
RSPB’s Dan Brown, who will be on hand with telescopes and binoculars, said: “At one stage their numbers were dangerously low – but they have recovered considerably and now more and more of them are becoming urban dwellers. They are a great example of successful conservation work.”
The peregrines visit the church to feed intermittently throughout the day. To make sure that people see the birds whenever they visit, Dan has recorded video footage of the birds on the steeple.
Rev Scott Burton of St Matthew’s is similarly excited about the project: “This is a fascinating project and we, particularly as an eco-congregation, are very proud to be part of it..”
‘Aren't Birds Brilliant! Perth Peregrines’ is supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund and in partnership with St Matthews Parish Church, Perth.
