Ben Nevis climb in memory of Evelyn

A FORMER Perth man’s family and friends have raised nearly £12,000 for a Manchester hospital.

Brian Doyle lost his wife Evelyn last year and in her memory a group, including daughter and son Caroline and Philip, tackled Snowdon in wild weather.

They have now raised enough money to furnish the haematology department at Manchester Royal Infirmary, where Evelyn was treated, with seven specialist beds.

Brian, well-known as the St Johnstone statistician, said: “Matron advised us that the beds have been very well received by both patients and staff alike. They are making a positive difference which is, of course, what we set out to achieve.”

In addition, Evelyn, who also hailed from Perth, attended the Beechwood Cancer Care Centre in Stockport and appreciated their support and care.

Brian said: “Caroline has also benefited from counselling so we felt it appropriate to try and help them this year.

“Philip and Caroline both participated in this year's Great Manchester 10k run clocking in impressive times of one hour and seven minutes. In the process they have already raised over £1000 towards our target.

“Despite the adverse weather conditions experienced at Snowdon last year it has not dampened – the pun is intended – our enthusiasm to do more. So 20 of us are taking on the challenging 4406 feet of Ben Nevis on Sunday, August 3.”
