Artists become entrepreneurs with shop opening

AMATEUR artists from Perthshire who have overcome major hurdles in life are set to become entrepreneurs after picking up new skills.

Regulars at the Perth-based Check-ln Group recently completed an ceramics ‘taster’ course at Dundee College – and now they plan to open their own shop to sell their wares.

Describing the studio sessions as “inspirational”, group manager James Alexander said those participants involved intend to develop their own ceramics, jewellery and fair-trade food enterprises.

“The aim of the course was to enable people with learning disabilities and experience of mental ill-health to develop new skills and confidence on their journey to mainstream employment,” he told the PA yesterday.

“It was a very worthwhile experience as it brought out the best in everyone and the group bonded really well.

“Everyone was sorry to see it end, but the enthusiasm, vision, and commitment shown by all was inspirational.”

The Check-In Group, which is based in the Fair City’s Tay Street, runs its own voluntary befriending service.

Mr Alexander was full of praise for the course’s organisers and one of the ‘Check-ln Buddies’ for their part in helping boost users’ morale.

“The group is grateful to Dundee College and tutor Ian Finan for their help in ensuring a positive experience for everyone taking part, and volunteer Chris Ealey for his enthusiastic support.”
