Recycling progress

GOOD progress being made with Big County recycling initiatives.

According to the latest report going before the Environment Committee tomorrow, Perth and Kinross Council is using a range of initiatives to help divert as much as possible from going to landfill.

Over the last six months the kerbside recycling service has been extended to over 15,000 households, with the first phase covering Crieff, Aberuthven, Auchterarder and Tulloch in Perth, and the second encompassing the Carse of Gowrie and Perth’s Western Edge.

The service enables householders to put out cardboard, paper, metal and plastics for recycling in their blue lidded bin, and to deposit food and garden waste in their brown lidded bins.

Nine new recycling points have opened during the same period, offering local facilities for items such as glass, food and drink cans, and paper. The new points are located in Glenfarg, Invergowrie, Luncarty, Dunning, Crook of Devon, Stanley, Victoria Street in Perth, Garry Bridge, by Killiecrankie, and Dunkeld.

The redevelopment earlier this year of four recycling centres – in Aberfeldy, Auchterarder, Blairgowrie and Kinross – has also widened the types of materials that residents can recycle, including textiles, batteries and electrical items.

The centres also now have separate facilities for timber recycling which has reduced the need for mixed waste processing and helped the Council to make savings as a result.
