A summer of success for sports development team

PERTH and Kinross Council’s sports development team has been delighted with the success of their recent summer events programme.

It saw a record number of school children, aged from six-16, take part in activities organised during the summer break.

This year’s activities included climbing and abseiling at Crieff’s Bennybeg, canoeing on the River Isla, gorge walking near Aberfeldy and mountain biking at Laggan Wolftrax.

There were also some overnight expeditions where, as well as outdoor sports, children were taught some bushcraft and camping skills.

Lifelong learning convener, Councillor Liz Grant, said: “Our programme of events this summer welcomed over 300 children, the largest response we’ve ever had.

“Perth and Kinross has so much to offer in the way of outdoor sports and activities and so it’s great to see so many young people making the most of it and engaging in new sports.”

After the success of this year’s events, the Sports Development Team is planning to expand the summer 2010 programme.

Plans are also well underway for the October, 2009, and Easter, 2010, activity programmes.
