POTENTIAL life savers are being urged to develop their expertise at a series of training sessions in Perth.
The British Red Cross Society is looking for volunteers to learn new skills, including basic first aid, trauma management and how to use an automatic defibrillator.
The organisation’s existing 35 helpers in Perthshire support the Scottish Ambulance Service by providing first aid cover at public events of all sizes throughout the year.
All first aiders have completed the society’s basic three-day course.
Jacqui McIntosh, administrator at BRCS headquarters in Perth, said new recruits are needed to help cope with a rise in the number of shows, sporting occasions and concerts attracting large crowds.
Anyone interested in becoming involved should have “a friendly, open personality and be able to work within a team”.
“We do not really have a figure in mind for how many volunteers to recruit,” Jacqui told the PA yesterday.
“This service is expanding due to a large increase in the need for first aiders at a growing number of events, so the more the merrier.
“Those taking part will have fun whilst learning new first aid and personal development skills.
“And there’s the chance to meet new people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences as part of the largest humanitarian organisation in the world.”
Perth first aid group leader Andrew Bryce, who works as an IT systems developer, said he has not looked back since undergoing training over 12 years ago.
“Being a volunteer member gives you the skills to potentially save a life,” he said.
“People see us and it gives them a sense of reassurance, while we take pride in being on hand at large gatherings.
“I have helped out at the Bell’s Sports Centre, the Inches, Perth Concert Hall, T in the Park and at events in the south of England.
“We assist in other areas and there are always opportunities to meet new people.”
Training sessions for first aiders take place in the Red Cross centre at 113 Leonard Street, Perth.
