Council nets savings thanks to early retirals

THE early retiral of council employees and teaching staff led to one-off costs for the local authority of more than £330,000 in 2008/09.

But they expect to make net revenue savings well in excess of that total over the next 10 years.

The figures will be discussed at a meeting of Perth and Kinross Council’s strategic policy and resources committee.

A total of 11 council staff took early retirement in the last financial year – at a cost of £335,546.

But the savings over the next five years will total £414,720, according to John Symon, head of finance.

Seven teachers left early at a cost of £97,681. But the savings for them – projected over a 10-year period – total £692,469.
