WHILE the spotlight falls on the local authority’s reaction to Grundon’s proposals for a waste to energy incinerator on Perth’s Shore Road, news that SITA are reviewing their own plans for the established Binn Farm complex have been welcomed by campaigners.
A spokesperson for SITA UK told the PA: “We are currently reviewing the detail of our energy from waste proposal for Binn Farm to ensure it provides the best possible waste management option for the people of Perth and Kinross.
“This review includes looking at alternative technology options, including gasification, and how these have developed since the application was originally submitted in 2006.
“Prior to finalising any changes to our proposal we will be contacting local community representatives directly to let them know about the new plans and provide them with an opportunity to give their views.”
Dave Beattie, senior chemical engineer with 40 years international experience, and a member of Bridgend, Gannochy and Kinnoull community council said: “I am very, very delighted to hear that Binn Farm is considering going for gasification. It is an environmentally friendly and much safer option than what’s proposed for Perth’s Shore Road.
“The process emits no dioxin or anything like the nasties that will be pumped from the Grundon plant because of the restricted air processes.
“I very much endorse the fact that the Binn Farm development has given so much more consideration to the community and recognises its concerns.
“Gasification would be impossible at Shore Road due to the site being far too small and the fact that a 50-metre exclusion zone is needed. “Gasification is ideal for a remote rural community like the area around Binn Farm.”
