Seve Ballesteros backs Perth cancer charity fundraiser

FORMER British Open golf champion Seve Ballesteros is among a host of celebrities backing a cancer charity fundraising event in Perth next week.

The Spaniard is battling back to fitness after a brain tumour and he has made a donation towards the disco, raffle and auction taking place in the Gannochy Suite at Dewar’s Rinks, Glover Street, on Saturday, March 20.

Local and national companies have also rallied round to gift prizes for the function, which will raise vital funds for Medilase, based at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

The event is being organised by Derek Yeaman (50) and his partner, Debbie Whytock (45), of Princes Street, Perth.

Derek lost his brother Alan (48), a popular milkman in the Dunkeld area, to cancer in 2005 – he had a brain tumour – and the pair have held fund-raising events ever since.

Train driver Derek fulfilled a promise he made to Alan before he died when he ran in the London Marathon in 2007.

“That’s what kicked off all the fund-raising in the first place and we have been raising money in the Kirkside ever since,” said Derek.

“Although the charity disco is sold out, raffle tickets are still available at £1 each and are on sale in the Kirkside Bar.

“After the disco, we intend to have a charity quiz night in the Kirkside and finally the golf event on May 28.”
