A RELIGIOUS gathering that regularly generates millions of pounds for the local economy will be held in Perth for at least the next three years, it was revealed on Monday.
Around 24,000 people flocked to the Fair City’s McDiarmid Park last year for the annual Jehovah’s Witness district convention.
The summer showpiece has been held at the home of St Johnstone FC every year since 1992, except once as worshippers instead opted to head to a national gathering in Edinburgh.
Recently-retired St Johnstone managing director Stewart Duff, who negotiated the deal that will see the Crieff Road venue host the event until 2013, said the Witnesses brought a “significant economic benefit” with them.
It is estimated that the three-day focal point, which will run from July 16 to 18, can inject £2-4million into local coffers.
Mr Duff continued: “Normally, the organisers of the convention come to us after it has taken place and discuss plans for the following year.
“But they contacted us before this year’s event and asked if they could keep coming back until 2013.
“It’s quite a significant deal for the whole of Perth because it generates a large economic benefit for the area.
“Around 8000 or 9000 people attend the convention every day, but people stay in the area for a lot longer than the weekend – some are here for the whole week.
“We’re delighted the Witnesses have agreed to come to McDiarmid Park until 2013. But, it’s not just good news for the football club, it’s great for everyone locally.”
About 30 people were baptised in front of 8000 people during a single day of last year’s district convention.
The ceremonies were performed in a special pool, measuring seven metres in diameter and holding 25,000 litres of water, in front of the Crieff Road stadium’s main stand.
It was the first time baptisms had taken place at the football ground since the Witnesses began using it 18 years ago.
