Adventurer’s visit to Perth rescheduled

ACCLAIMED Polar explorer David Hempleman-Adams will try again to reach Perth later this month.

Last month’s extreme weather and travel chaos thwarted his visit to Perth Concert Hall as part of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s agm and winter talks series.

But Hempleman-Adams is up for the challenge of tackling Perth again, for a rescheduled ‘Inspiring People’ talk on January 24.

The Englishman, who is the RRGS’s vice-president, was the first person in history to reach the geographic and magnetic North and South Poles as well as to climb the highest peaks in all seven continents – the adventurers’ grand slam.

To coincide with the 100th anniversary of Captain Robert Scott’s ill-fated expedition to the South Pole, Hempleman-Adams will offer his perspective on his book, ‘The Heart of the Great Alone’.

The stunning tome and accompanying exhibition uses remarkable photographs taken in Antarctica by Herbert George Ponting and Frank Hurley that capture Scott’s ill-fated journey to the South Pole.

Presented to King George V and now part of the Royal Photograph Collection, the pictures are considered to be among the finest examples of the duo’s work still in existence.

David Hempleman-Adams co-authored the book with Emma Stuart and Sophie Gordon.

The talk on January 24 starts at 7.30pm.

Tickets priced £8 for adults (free for under 18s, students and RSGS members) are available from the venue.
