Strathtay Harriers’ day to remember

THE sun shone on a memorable day of fun athletics organised by Perth Strathtay Harriers at the George Duncan Athletics Arena in Perth.

Sunday’s event was all about introducing athletics to youngsters who may never have thought the sport was for them.

It enjoyed backing from Perth and Kinross Disability Sports.

The aim was to show it was possible to break down the barriers that exist in just getting out there and taking part. The emphasis for the event was firmly on having fun, with a little competitive edge.

There were fun runs for existing club members, field events and even an old-fashioned metric mile run for some of the Strathtay Harriers’ senior athletes.

Everyone who went along had broad smiles on their faces and lapped-up a great day of athletics at the excellent Live Active Leisure facility.

Perth Strathtay Harriers are indebted to the vastly experienced Scottish coach Eric Simpson and his international athletes for coaching some of the older athletes.

Jim Hunter, Harriers president, said: “It was great to see so many children taking part and enjoying their day out at the track. The day went well with Harrier coaches taking the lead in a variety of events. We were also very fortunate to have Lynn Melville from Perth and Kinross Disability Sport in attendance and lending her support.

“This event would not have been possible without the generous support of the Guildry Incorporation of Perth and charities administered by Perth and Kinross Council.

“The Harriers would also like to thank Councillor Archie MacLellan for all his personal support in organising this first event of its kind in Perth. Archie also did a great job in presenting awards and keepsakes to all competitors.

“Thanks also to Councillor Bob Ellis for helping out and running a mile with some of our senior athletes, along with our membership secretary Stuart Wyllie.

“Local Physical charity trustees were also present to assist in the many behind the scenes jobs that make an event like this a success.

“A special mention should go to Caroline Ness from Perth and Kinross Disability Sport for all her help in getting this event from the idea stage to reality and all the bits in-between.”
