New take on old fairy tale

A NEW take on a much-loved fairytale is set to captivate young ‘beauties’ and ‘beasties’ in Perthshire.
Classic story-lovers aged eight are being invited to get along to see ‘Caged’, the award-winning Catherine Wheels Theatre Company’s take on ‘Beauty and the Beast’, when it comes to Perth Theatre on Tuesday, April 19.
Dark, quirky and heartbreaking, the highly physical show takes a fresh and decidedly unpanto-esque look at the traditional favourite.
Described as “a story about two people trapped together, and finding more freedom than they ever imagined”, Caged starts with its two main characters looking as if they will never get along.
The Beast licks his hands, stands on the toilet and runs through the woods, while Beauty carries a hankie, never gets mud on her shoes and always remembers to send a thank-you note.
So how come – when she sees him run like that, when he brings down a deer, when they sit at night just watching the stars – that her heart starts to spin?
Scripted by Rob Evans, Scottish theatre company Catherine Wheels are putting on two performances of Caged at Perth Theatre – at 2pm and 6.30pm on April 19.
