Anti-incinerator petition

PERTH City Centre councillor Peter Barrett yesterday moved to mobilise opposition to the new plans lodged for the Shore Road incinerator.

Launching a public petition against the energy-from-waste plant with Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie MSP, Cllr Barrett said: “The fight-back against Grundon starts here.

“Time is short and once again we need to ensure that the vital interests of our city, the futures of people that live here, and our local businesses are defended against the narrow commercial interests of a waste company from the opposite end of the country.”

Backing the campaign to halt the revised proposals, Mr Rennie said: “People in Perth and beyond got behind the ‘Stop the Incinerator’ campaign with hundreds signing Peter’s petition and thousands opposing the incinerator.

“We need to do it all over again to redouble our efforts and make sure that this time Grundon’s incinerator plans are killed stone dead.”

Cllr Barrett urged the Fair City public to again man the barricades.

“Grundon must be hoping for incinerator fatigue to set in,” he declared.

”We can’t let that happen. They can’t be allowed to wear our community and resistance down.

“I know that every sector of our community is really worried at the devastating impact that a huge chemical plant producing hazardous gases and burning waste 24 hours a day, seven days a week on the South Inch will have on our city.

“We need to send the clearest possible message in massive numbers that this is still the wrong thing in the wrong place.”

Cllr Barrett appealed for help from local residents to deliver over 6000 petition forms he is issuing in his council ward.

“If you can collect signatures from people you know at work, church, sports clubs, community groups or parents at school-gates please get in touch and get behind the campaign,” he said.
