Historic banner to lead the way

A CLAN banner with an ancient connection to Dunning will play a leading role in a village celebration.

Jim Gale, a Dunning resident and member of Dunning Parish Historical Society, explained: “The Rollo family has a long connection to Dunning dating back to the 12th/13th Century. On August 26, 1511, William Rollo, a local Lord, granted Dunning a Burgh of Barony charter. This allowed the village of Dunning to have resident craftsmen and to hold markets. The granting of this charter allowed Dunning to develop as an important village in Strathearn. We were delighted when the current Lord Rollo offered to loan us his personal Clan Banner. It means that on Saturday, August 27, 500 years after the granting of the original charter, the Banner will head a procession to the Rollo Park. At the park we have a celebration planned from 2–4pm.”

Frances Philip, chairperson of the Community Council, added: “Today Dunning is a small prosperous village with a wide variety of businesses. It’s important to remember that it all started 500 years ago with the granting of this Charter. We hope lots of the village residents will join the celebration to mark this historic occasion.”
