Be aware of new email scam

TAYSIDE Police are warning computer users of a new scam sweeping the region.

A spokesperson said: “Tayside Police has been made aware of a number of incidents involving an internet scam where members of the public who are online receive a pop-up message claiming to be from Strathclyde Police.

“The message then states that person’s computer has been locked by the police and they will need to call a given number and pay £100 fine as they have been viewing adult content online – which is not the case.

“We would like to assure the public that this is an internet scam and has absolutely nothing to do with Strathclyde Police and that police forces never ask the public for money. We would urge the public not to follow the instructions on screen or call the number given or send any money.”

Officers are currently carrying out numerous and extensive inquires to trace the source of this scam and would also ask that anyone who has received this pop-up on their computer to contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222 or report to any police officer.
