PLANS to relocate a supermarket in Aberfeldy were unveiled yesterday.
The Co-operative Group has agreed a deal to move from its existing premises in The Square to a larger site in Dunkeld Street.
Subject to planning permission for an eventual redevelopment of the premises, to provide a larger food store, the deal will initially see the firm take over the Londis store and petrol station.
The current Co-operative food store in Aberfeldy will remain open until the new store is built, with the Girvans outdoor and hardware shops, along with its vehicle mechanics’ workshop, all relocating within the town.
Ian Mason, the Co-operative’s food acquisitions manager, said: “We’ve been looking for an opportunity to provide shoppers in Aberfeldy with an improved Co-operative food store, and the Girvans site is ideal.
“As well as a site where we can invest and develop a new store and petrol station, we hope this will serve as a catalyst for the regeneration of the whole town.”
Mr Mason added that it was too early to say if the development will result in the creation of new jobs.
Blair Girvan, managing director of Girvans of Aberfeldy, said: “I am pleased to have concluded a deal with the Co-operative Group, and one where we can relocate our hardware and outdoor shops, and build a new workshop for our vehicle mechanics.
“It will protect jobs and services in the town, and ultimately bring major benefits to Aberfeldy.”
Subject to planning permission being approved, the Co-operative Group is expected to begin trading from the site early next year.
