Perth’s child protection “Best in Scotland”

PERTH and Kinross Council has been praised for receiving outstanding feedback on its services that protect children and young people.

An inspection report prepared by the Care Inspectorate identified the local authority’s six key strengths and concluded it was a “sector leader”.

In particular, it pointed to “exceptional leadership and direction” provided to staff, high quality and trusting relationships with staff and “outstanding individual support” provided to children and families.

It also highlighted the high quality of support available in evenings and at weekends, positive improvements in the lives of children in need of protection, and a strong culture and ethos of improving outcomes through integrated services and partnership working.

Presenting the “marvellous” report to members, leader of the council Ian Miller said: “There is a huge amount to praise in this inspection report.

“There is no doubt that our committed management and staff are focused on delivering services that our community need and in particular to our most vulnerable residents.

“However, there is no room for complacency. We must continue to strive for further improvement and efficiency in all sectors.

“I am confident that this will be achieved. I want to pass on my congratulations and sincere thanks to all of our staff who have contributed to achieving this accolade of 'Best in Scotland'.”

Describing the report as “exceptional”, chief executive, Bernadette Malone said: “We should be very proud of our staff.”

Adding to the plaudits, Cllr George Hayton described the feedback as “excellent” and Tory representative Alexander Stewart pointed out Ms Malone’s “passion” towards the care service.

Others also added words of praise, but Cllr Willie Wilson reiterated Cllr Miller’s warning.

“Elected members, it is fine to bask in the reflective glory of a good report, but we must not get complacent,” he said.

“It’s great to get to the top, but we will now have to sustain, develop and encourage our officers to do even more.”
