A TOTAL of £4.2 million has been allocated to carry out junction improvement works on the A90 Perth-Dundee road.
The first of two projects, which started at the weekend, is the £2.2 million upgrade on a two-and-half-mile (4km) stretch of the busy commuter route.
Work on the eastbound carriageway, between The Snabs and Star Farm at Longforgan, is expected to last 24 days.
The work will be carried out by Tayside Contracts on behalf of Transport Scotland and will be supervised by BEAR.
The second scheme is the £2 million upgrade of a section of the route at Powrie Brae and is expected to get underway in mid-November.
The contract will be carried out by Leiths on behalf of Transport Scotland and will again be supervised by BEAR.
The news was welcomed yesterday by Perth SNP MSP Roseanna Cunningham .
She said “John Swinney's announcement of a £4.2 million package of improvements at Longforgan and Powrie Brae on the A90 is very welcome news.
“I am also pleased that the work due to start at Longforgan will use 'Tayset' materials – a road surfacing product which has won awards for its sustainability credentials.
“This sustainable product not only uses recycled road material but, as it is laid cold, its manufacture is extremely energy efficient.
“Tayside Contracts are to be congratulated for their efforts in improving the sustainability of major road projects.
“The A90 between Perth and Dundee is a hugely important link carrying a huge amount of traffic every day.
“Improving junctions increases safety for all road users and for the people who live in the communities alongside this essential artery."
