A “CONCERNING” trend is continuing across the Big County according to local law enforcers.
Despite numerous warnings, drivers continue to turn a deaf ear to pleas not to speak into a mobile phone while driving. And the number of motorists prepared to gamble with safety and the law is spiralling.
Police caught an incredible 37% more drivers between April and September this year compared to the same period last year.
Sergeant Kerry Macleod, of Perth and Kinross’s road policing unit, told the PA: “This is concerning. We are noticing a significant rise in the number of motorists continuing to drive whilst illegally using a mobile phone.
“The dangers of driving while distracted having a conversation into a mobile phone have been well publicised, the impact on road safety and the increased likelihood of having an accident are well known, but still drivers continue to do it,” he added.
The law is clear, hand-held mobile phones must not be used – including sending or reading text messages – while driving.
Each motorist caught driving while using a hand-held mobile phone faces a £60 fine and three penalty points on their driving licence.
They often also face massive hikes in insurance premiums and the cold shoulder from some providers.
Sergeant Macleod urged motorists to switch off phones while driving, let answer machine services take the strain, and save phone calls for a safe spot.
