Swimming: Strathallan pupil takes the gold in Edinburgh

PERTHSHIRE’S Joe Lipworth (15), who swims with Dundee City Aquatics, enjoyed success at the Scottish Gas National Age Group Championships held at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh.

The Strathallan pupil won a gold medal in the 200m breast stroke event in a personal best long course time of 2-29.48. He also won silver medals in personal best times in the 400 individual medley [4-46.94 ], 200m freestyle [2-01.32], 100m butterfly [1-01.09] and another silver in the 200m individual medley [2-15.62 ] and a bronze in the 200m butterfly [2-19.40].

Joe had to attend the Accident and Emergency in Ninewells Hospital after a training accident when he fell off an exercise ball and damaged his knee, the week before the nationals.

He is now looking forward to competing at the British Gas ASA National Youth Championships in August in Sheffield.
