Whisky duty increase halved

Chancellor Alistair Darling has halved a planned 8% duty increase on Scotch whisky after protests by the industry.

The increase, to take effect on December 1, will be just 4%, it was confirmed.

The new figure was announced by the Scottish Secretary, Jim Murphy.
