£840m savings made in public sector

Almost £840 million was saved across the public sector last year as part of an efficiency drive, official figures show.

The figures amounted to about 3.1% of the Scottish Government's budget of more than £30 billion in 2008/09. This topped the 2% target set by the SNP administration.

The Government also said that efficiency statistics are on track to top this year's target.
