More deprivation in ex-mining areas

Former mining communities are still suffering deprivation more than a decade on from the demise of the coal industry, a report has found.

The study concluded that tackling the hardship remains "unfinished business".

It found deprivation in Scotland is disproportionately concentrated in ex-mining areas and warned that any economic recovery in the communities will be tested by the current recession.
